Obituary of Dixie Sue Horne

Dixie Freeman Horne, beloved wife, mother, and grandmother, passed away peacefully at the age of 90 in Mesa, Arizona, on December 3, 2023.

Dixie was born in Mesa on July 8, 1933, to Andrew Allen Freeman and Muriel Power Freeman. She was the third of four children, with two brothers and one sister.

Dixie spent most of her life in Lehi and attended Lehi Elementary School, where she first met her future husband, William (Bill) Horne, in the third grade. She went on to attend Mesa High School, where she enjoyed doing pom as a Rabbette. She graduated in 1951, then attended college and earned a business degree. Her first job was at the Mountain Bell Telephone Company, working in both the Mesa and San Diego offices.

Dixie married Bill on May 1, 1953, in the Mesa Temple, and the couple honeymooned and set up house on the Navy base in Miramar, San Diego. When Bill completed his service in 1955, they returned to Arizona and started raising children. It was then that Dixie realized her greatest happiness, creating a peaceful, loving home for her family.

Dixie was a lifelong member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in many callings. Together with Bill, she served a mission at the Mesa Family History Center.

She also spent her time caring for flowers and birds, and she was known for the beautiful red geraniums she grew, some older than 20 years. Bill loved “driving Miss Dixie” on day trips for birdwatching and spotting spring flowers. They also enjoyed traveling with friends to landmarks and church history sites.

She spent her retirement years in both Mesa and Lakeside, Arizona. It was at her Lakeside home that her backyard truly became a refuge for wildlife in the area.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband Bill in 2010, her sons Benjamin and Kevin, and her siblings Wayne, Marlene, and Arthur. She is survived by her children: Keith (Leslie); Shelly McNaughton; Lisa Hargrave (Robin); Kevin’s wife (Norma); and Kenneth (Audra); as well as 28 grandchildren and 44 great-grandchildren.

Services will be held on Saturday, December 16th, at 10 am, at the Latter-day Saint church building at 532 S. Greenfield Road in Mesa, with a viewing one hour prior at 9 am. Interment will be at the City of Mesa Cemetery.
