Obituary of Sylvia Jean Hancock Smith

Sylvia Jean Hancock Smith, 75, of Glendale, Arizona passed away peacefully at her home with her family by her side on Wednesday, October 13, 2004. Sylvia was born in Wilcox, Arizona on October 26, 1928. She married Maurice W. Smith on June 5, 1947 and together they made a home and raised their four children in Alamosa, Colorado. In 1994, Sylvia and Maurice moved to Glendale, Arizona to retire. Sylvia is preceded in death by her father, Hyrum Hancock, Sr., her mother, Bennie Allen Hancock, her brother, Hyrum Hancock, Jr. and her sister, Patsy Hancock Graham. She is survived by her stepmother, Loralee Hancock of Mesa, AZ, her sister, Rita Hancock Beecroft of Mesa, AZ, her brother, Douglas Hancock of Mesa, AZ, her husband, Maurice W. Smith of Glendale, AZ, her children, Michael Smith Kathy of Tucson, AZ, Vianne Coleman Richard of Council Bluffs, IA, Shelly Smith of Phoenix, AZ and Mark Smith Kathy of Alamosa, CO. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Cari Harger Jordan of Kansas City, KS, Andrew Coleman Dana of Council Bluffs, IA, Zachary Smith of Denver, CO and Cheyenne Smith of Phoenix, AZ. Sylvia was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, sister and friend. Her philosophy in this life was to live life to its fullest and appreciate everything it has to offer; to love and enjoy family and friends, to pray for those who are less fortunate and to lend a helping hand for those in need. Her sense of humor and loving smile could brighten up a room. Her abundance of unconditional love and spirit will live in our hearts forever. Although she will no longer be with us in this life, we are all comforted in knowing that she is at peace now and will remain with us always in spirit. God Bless you, Sylvia and may you always rest in peace. Visitation will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 16, 2004 at Meldrum Mortuary, 52 N. Macdonald in Mesa, Arizona, with memorial services to be held at 11:00 a.m. Internment at Mesa Cemetery. The family requests that in lieu of flowers donations may be made to Hospice of the Valley, 1510 E. Flower St Phoenix, AZ 85014 in Sylvia Smith's name.
