Obituary of Elsie Rose Jones

Our mother, grandmother, great grandmother, Elsie Rose Swapp Jones, passed away Sunday morning February 27, 2022, in Mesa, AZ. Elsie was born September 2, 1926, in Silver City, NM to Ben Loman and Glady Northrup Swapp. After high school graduation she moved to Kirtland and worked at the hospital in Shiprock. While Myles Rey Jones was home on furlough, he met Elsie at church. They were engaged a couple of months later and were married in the Salt Lake City LDS Temple August 21, 1945. They began their married life in Tucson, AZ while Myles earned a civil engineering degree at the University of Arizona. Elsie worked at Beneficial Finance until their first child was born. In 1951 they moved to Fruitland and made Fruitland/Kirtland area their home for the next 58 years. It was here they raised their family of 7 children. During their years in New Mexico, Elsie supported Myles as he served in the LDS bishopric and as bishop. She taught early morning seminary as well as teaching in other church organizations. Besides caring for her family, she was very involved in the family farm and dairy-processing and selling raw milk. She was a consummate seamstress-sewing even jeans, men's suits, and several wedding dresses. Her "love language" was service and many were recipients of a loaf of bread, a home-cooked meal, a hemmed dress, or sewing lessons. She was known for writing poetry and was called upon regularly to write a poem for special events such as school or church activities and weddings. In later years she began oil painting and gifted beautiful works of art to her children and grandchildren.
