I am so sad Karen has left us - I felt sure she would beat this cancer back again because she had such an indominable spirit that never gave up. Karen will be missed by so many in the world of disability family advocates. That's the context within she made a huge impact on me and my perspective on how well or how deficiently families were served within the system. When Karen would reach out to me about some egregious situation happening in her advocacy work, she didn't let it go - she kept at it - and even though some things seemed to recur over and over, she calmly, but passionately kept at it. I don't know anyone with that kind of stamina. And I will miss her. It was a lesson to me that she always couched what she said and did with sincere thankfulness for those who would help. What a lovely servant of the Lord and example. May the Lord bless and comfort you all as you grieve her loss.

Mom was just plain amazing! Growing up no matter how busy she was she would drop everything to help my sister and me out. She was very involved in every aspect of my life and always guided me toward good decisions. Mom was always helping out at school, and I remember her playing piano in one of my junior high band concerts. She was a woman of many talents! The passing of our dad (Richard) at such a young age was devastating, but she remained strong and really focused on her volunteer work for the last 30 + years. She also had the opportunity to travel and went on many cruises. Mom was overly generous with everyone she crossed paths with. It is well known how involved she was in the community and helping others. The world is a better place because of mom...it's hard to imagine a world without her but know she is in a better place now. -Kevin Van Epps

Karen was a wonderful woman, friend and patient; she did so much for so many throughout her life. I was practically a "member" of the Van Epps family since Charlie and my dad, Preston, were partners for years and Charlie almost like a second father to me afterf my daad's unexpected death. Karen's husband was also a lifetime aquaintance and a fine physician as well until his untimely passing. My condolences to the entire family; a long life and very well lived. Karen and my mother Carolyn Betts were friends for more than 40 years. Their friendship was more than a treasure. It was the strength of two women who used their knowledge and courage to become the pioneers in the autism community in Arizona. Karen was the champion, cheerleader, sister-friend my mother needed and will always cherish. I will always be grateful for Karen for not only being the warrior my mother needed by her side when I was too young to understand, and sometimes as her shield, Karen was, and still is, the ray of sunshine that makes/made lives sparkle. Dear Lord, thank You so much for Karen. Thank You for such a remarkable legacy. Much love to Kevin and Elizabeth (whom I only met once when we were all very young) and to the grandsons I've heard about from my mother.

I am sorry to hear of Karen's passing. She and I were classmates in high school at Anthon. Ia. When we graduated, we lost touch but through a network of mutual acquaintences, I knew of her advocating for the intellectually disabled in Arizona. For that alone, you can be proud and honored that she leaves that legacy. In high school l remember mostly her dry sense of humor, always delivered in a matter of fact and deadpan manner. She excelled in the speech contests and one act plays, Especially the humorous ones. Treasure the million memories she has given you...memories are the best gift she leaves for you.

Karen was not only a cousin but a good friend. Though our times together were infrequent due to distance, we always had such great times together when we did see each other and kept up with many phone conversations. I especially cherish the family gatherings we had in Swedesburg. She loved her family so much and her passing brings a great loss in many lives. We will be at her service with you in spirit.
